Gardening Basics

When it comes to gardening, there’s a lot going for this great hobby. For starters, gardening can be incredibly relaxing, despite being hard work. It can also become a way to feed yourself without spending too much money. It could even become an alternate source of income, depending on your level of commitment. Regardless of your goals when gardening, gardening has a lot to offer you, and there’s almost no downside.

When you’re starting a garden, there are a number of things you’re going to want to know in advance to improve your chances of having a fruitful (get it?) gardening experience. For starters, you’re going to want to be ready and willing get your hands, and everything else, dirty. With that in mind, don’t wear your finest clothes, like your Sunday’s best, or your Victoria’s Secret. Instead, wear something you don’t mind ruining. Or, for that matter, where what other farmers and gardeners wear. Overalls. These garments are literally made to protect your other clothing by taking the brunt of the damage for them.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that you’re going to need to your homework on each different plant you’re growing. We often over simplify the growing of plants. Sun, water, soil, done. But, it’s much more nuanced than that. For example, jalapenos like full sunlight and little water, but something like spinach requires more water and less direct sunlight. The nutrients in the soil will also vary from plant to plant, so read up on each plant to intend to grow before hand to maximize your chances of success.
